- Basement Flooding Remediation and Water Quality Improvement Master Plan – Area 36
IBI Group conducted a detailed examination of the existing sanitary and storm drainage systems within the City of Toronto’s “Area 36”, which is located in Etobicoke, with storm drainage outlet being Humber Creek, a tributary to the Humber River.

Developing remedial alternatives for flood-prone “cluster areas”
The project included extensive field work and ground truthing to:
- confirm surface drainage connectivity, within residential neighbourhoods and the commercial/industrial area north of Highway 401; and
- help identify overland flow pathways in the master plan.
Once the field work was complete, a detailed hydrologic/hydraulics model was developed using the Innovyze Infoworks CS modelling platform. Model calibration and validation were undertaken using flow data available from a number of sewer flow meters, and the model was used to simulate system responses to historical events that resulted in reports of basement and surface flooding.
Once the model had been validated, it was used to develop a number of remedial alternatives for flood-prone “cluster areas” within the overall project area. The options that would meet the City’s level-of-service requirements were presented at public information sessions and helped identify the preferred approach. Conceptual designs were prepared for the preferred alternatives looking at all aspects of constructability and permitting needs. This project was completed following the Class Environmental Assessment process.
